Soares became the OSCE Special Representative on South Caucasus
Joao Soares was appointed the OSCE Special Representative for South Caucasus and Nagorno-Karabakh. According to "Trend", this decision was announced yesterday at a plenary session of the 20th annual session of the OSCE after consultations with the delegations of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.
"Joao Soares has extensive knowledge and personal relationships with important partners in the region. In addition, he has the necessary diplomatic skills to help to bring people together and focus the necessary attention to the ongoing political conflicts in the Caucasus" - said the President of PA of OSCE Petros Efthymiou.
In turn, Soares stressed that he was honored to perform this role. In his view, it is necessary to intensify the ongoing process of talks on the Caucasus, as well as support the efforts of the Minsk Group of OSCE to achieve peace in the region.
Joao Soares was a member of the European Parliament in 1994-1995, in 1995-2002 - Mayor of Lisbon. He is a member of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly since 2002. Within two years he was president of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
