Expert: Russia will not demand Ukraine's recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia2011-07-13 13:31
A well-known political scientist, Director of the Ukrainian branch of the Institute of CIS countries, Vladimir Kornilov is sure that Ukraine has not finally decided the question of recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
As the Golos.UA reported, Kornilov, commenting on statements by the country's foreign minister on this occasion, said that the functions of Ministry of Foreign Affairs are to confirm the official position of the state. However, he noted that the political situation may change.
"We have previously recognized such states, which had not been generally conceived as a state. Moreover, Ukraine itself was recognized by those states that had previously thought they would never recognize Ukraine" - he added.
Kornilov also said that Russian position is rather soft with respect to the recognition of the sovereignty of Tskhinval and Sukhum from its allies. "Even Belarus has not recognized these public entities, recognized by the Russian Federation. Of course, it (Russia) will not toughly and categorically demand it from Ukraine" - said the expert.
Previously Director of Information Policy Agency of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Voloshin said that his country would not recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, because he does not intend to spoil relations with Tbilisi.
"Ukraine remains committed to the territorial integrity of Georgia. Ukraine does not recognize the independence South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as it does not recognize independence of Kosovo. We regard Georgia as an important partner and friend of the post-Soviet area" - he said.
It should be noted that Viktor Yanukovych after his election to the presidency has repeatedly said that Ukraine does not recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He explained his decision because he does not agree with the policy of double standards.
Recall, that after the armed conflict in South Ossetia in August 2008, unleashed by the Georgian authorities, Russia, speaking on the side of Tskhinval, and recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Later, Moscow's position was supported by Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru. Official Tbilisi severed diplomatic relations with the Russian side and the two republics were called "occupied territories".
