Georgian Interior Ministry: We specially promote spy scandals
The head of Research Department of the Interior Ministry Shota Utiashvili said that the authorities deliberately focus attention on the spy scandals that are unfolding in the country.
Utiashvili said in an interview to "Kommersant" that in Georgia there works a very strong spy network, trained by Russia, and Georgia wants to warn its citizens about the danger. "You can not to believe in it, but it's a fact: great agent network has remained in Georgia from Soviet times, and our problem is that people do not realize how easily they can get involved in such filthy stories. Many get involved in it because of their stupidity or ignorance. So, we have to promote these spy scandals. This way people learn what can happen and what to expect. This is state security" - the words of Georgian official.
Previously, the law enforcement bodies of Georgia have detained the personal photographer of President Mikhail Saakashvili Irakli Gedenidze and his wife. There were also detained Zurab Kurtsikidze and George Abdaladze.
It was noted that the police raided the houses of the detainees, taking their cell phones and computers including devices of their families.
The detainees were accused of providing a different information to "organization, working under the cover of one of the special services of foreign states, to the detriment of the interests of Georgia".
Irakli Gedenidze has later admitted in cooperation with Russian intelligence agencies.
Gedenidze said that he had provided the order of the day of the Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili, the itineraries of his convoy and the location of the residences to Zurab Kurtsikidze, who was in direct contact with the Russian side. According to the photographer for , he was forced to espionage by threats and blackmail. Kurtsikidze denied his guilt.
Over the weekend, other detainees gave a confession.
