Zatulin: Russia respects the will of the Ossetian people
As the director of the Institute of CIS Countries, State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin noted, the position expressed earlier by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on the possible accession of South Ossetia into Russia is primarily a signal of Moscow's readiness to respect the will of the Ossetian people. As reported by the "GHN", such opinion was expressed today by Zatulin in an interview with Russian news agency "Interfax".
Earlier, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that the issue of accession of South Ossetia to Russia will depend directly on the Ossetian people.
"The fact of discussion of this issue is not surprising. It could be surprising if we would have stated that this is impossible despite the will or desire of people of South Ossetia. We should understand this statement of Vladimir Putin in this context. But I do not think this is the beginning of a process of accession of South Ossetia into Russia, because, based on the same statement the prime minister, the beginning of this process must be started by the Ossetian people"- said Zatulin. "The whole question of tactics for today is associated with a favorable moment to minimize the consequences of this, which the international community will obviously try to impose to the society" - said Zatulin.
According to expert, currently the main factor limiting South Ossetia from accession to Russia is international situation and the attitude of the international community. "Of course, Georgia would take advantage of a situation, if such a decision follows, in order to prove that there happened an annexation of South Ossetia" - said the expert. He also considers important the fact that the Ossetian people does not divide itself to "the north and south" Ossetians.
Recently, the ambassador of South Ossetia in Russia Dmitry Medoyev said that South Ossetia is not considering accession into Russia, but is interested in establishing the Union State of Russia and Belarus.
