Later, Moscow's position was supported by Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru.
Official Tbilisi severed diplomatic relations with the Russian side, the two republics were called "occupied territories".
According to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, actions of the Russian authorities were "optimal" during the war in South Ossetia.
"We were able, on the one hand, to defend national interests, but on the other hand, to prevent the forced conflict. It took place but it was short and did not have such significant consequences that could have arose from such a conflict" - said Medvedev in a recent interview with Financial Times.
