Young opposition activist sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment for drugs
One of the leaders of the youth organization of the "Georgian Party" Shota Yamanidze was sentenced to seven years in prison by the decision of Tbilisi City Court. As reported by the "Georgia-News", he was arrested in mid-May on suspicion of possessing and distributing drugs.
The leader of "Civil Front" Jaba Jishkariani has already expressed his protest against the conviction. He believes that judge Naira Gigitashvili was not been objective in pronouncement of this sentencing.
"The fact that Yamanidze was charged by the second part of Article 260 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provides for penalties for possession and distributing of large quantities of narcotic substances is very important. There are a lot more of other inconsistencies in this case" - said Dzhishkarini.
He also pointed out that the search of detainee was held without presence of lawyer and witnesses. During the search Yamanidze they had found a white powder, allegedly heroin.
