Sakartvelo expects a good crop of nuts
Georgian experts predict good crop of hazelnut in the country this year. As reported by the "Business-Georgia", they believe that the crop of nuts this year will exceed the previous year's crop at 60 - 80 percent. In particular, this opinion is shared by the director of the Union of Exporters of Georgia Mikhail Khomeriki. He told the reporters that the harvesting of nuts in Sakartvelo began several days ago. However, he clarified that the export price of nuts has not been established still. As we know, the price of the nuts determined by the market nuts of Turkey, Khomeriki said. It depends on the price of Turkish hazelnuts in the world market.
He added that according to projection, Turkey also expects a good harvest this product. However, Turkish producers may hold part of the crop in order to keep prices from falling. The exact price of the nuts at the world market will be known on August 25, and only after that they will start to buy nuts from population of Sakartvelo.
The expert added that to date nuts can be bought at the price of 2.5 GEL per kilo in areas of Guria and Samegrelo. In 2010, the export price of Georgian nuts was 6.3 dollars.
Khomeriki also cited the data of "Gruzstat", according to which 28 800 tonnes of nuts were harvested in Georgia in 2010.
