Disaster has disrupted work of checkpoint between Georgia and Azerbaijan
Last night the flood, caused by heavy rains, was washed away the road in a few meters from the checkpoint between Georgia and Azerbaijan. As reported by the "GHN", now the traffic on the linking road is carried out only in one direction, crossing the border in both directions is significantly hampered.
As the governor of the Kakheti region Giorgi Gviniashvili explained in an interview, restoration work was began on-site emergency at dawn.
We have previously reported that the flood had befell Kakheti region of Georgia on the evening before. Hundreds of homes, washed away roads and bridges were flooded, in some areas evacuation works are being carried out.
Areas Sagarejo, Gurjaani and Lagodekhi were affected particularly hard by disaster. The continuous rain washed away the roads between villages and regional centers. In Lagodekhi because of the flood of Shromis Hevi river were evacuated from residential buildings.
The amount of damage will be calculated when the water level will drop.
Recall, in June, heavy rains that occurred in the area of Rikotsky pass, which connect western and eastern parts of the country, led to a flood of Mtishevi river. Landslides and debris flows came off from the mountains, some 200 cars were blocked, traffic between east and west Georgia has been interrupted.
