Shevardnadze: Georgian authorities are destroying the country
Former Georgian leader Eduard Shevardnadze said that his successor as president, Mikhail Saakashvili, together with his team is leading the country towards destruction.
"I am very sorry and worried that after my retirement people who have embarked on the destruction of Georgia came into power", - this, as reported by VZGLYAD, said Shevardadze in an interview to "Asaval-Dasavali".
"These authorities are doing a lot of wrong steps" - he added.
Earlier, Shevardnadze noted that Georgia will be able to resolve its problems only in case of normalization of relations with Russia.
"If Georgia can normalize relations with Russia, then our country will be able to unite and grow normally, and if it can't then Georgia is doomed to failure to resolve its problems" - he said.
According to Shevardnadze, the West would not defend Georgia in its dispute with Moscow, and thus to spoil relations with Russia. "That's why Georgia should look for ways to normalize relations with Russia which will create conditions for solving the problems of our country" - said Shevardnadze.
Shevardnadze also said that relations with Russia at the highest level is very important for Georgia. At the same time, he talked about the fact that Georgia is advantageous if Vladimir Putin once again becomes the Russian president.
"Remember, the president of Russia Dmitry Medvedev has refused to negotiate with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. Considering that Putin recieved Georgia's opposition leaders, I do not exclude that he will hold talks with Saakashvili" - said the former head of Georgia.
He also believes that Putin is quite loyal to the Georgians.
