Spanish authorities released Giorgobiani
Law enforcement authorities of Spain have decided to withdraw the arrest of a former head of the Forestry Department of Georgia Bidzina Giorgobiani. As reported by the "GHN", former Georgian official told about his release through the social network: "They released me at 11 o'clock at night, but I should not leave the territory of Spain for two weeks" - he said in Internet. He added that "the Germans fought heroically".
"I escaped a serious mess. I was on vacation with my children for a week, and I found myself in the Interpol. I've survived through three difficult weeks, and even have written one good book in the dark" - added Giorgobiani.
Earlier today it was reported that one of the leaders of the Conservative Party of Georgia Lasha Chkhartishvili stood up for the former Georgian official, who was Chief of Forestry Department of Georgia in 2004 -2005. He was wanted by Georgian authorities on the so-called red circular of "Interpol" on charges of abuse of power. In 2007 he was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison by Tbilisi City Court.
However, according to Chkhartishvili, prosecution of Giorgobiani is illegal and it is a political reprisal.
"The reason for this punishment was the fact that Bidzina Giorgobiani opposed the illegal activities of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia Ivane (Vano) Merabishvili and Head of the Department of Constitutional Security Akhalaia who have been associated with document forgery on the extraction of timber, together with the regime of Kokoity, and the sale of the forest" - The Conservative Party said.
It appealed to the authorities of Spain and Germany not to extradite Giorgobiani to Georgian side. His life in a Georgian prison may be in jeopardy, the Conservatives added.
