Abkhazia is electing a new president
Today, the Republic of Abkhazia is hosting an early presidential election. As recalled by the "GHN", there are three candidates. One of them is the current Vice-President of Abkhazia Alexander Ankvab, acting president of the republic after the death of Sergei Bagapsh. Another candidates are prime minister Sergei Shamba and the leader of the opposition party "National Unity Forum" - Khajimba.
According to information made public a few days ago by the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Abkhazia, there were opened 172 polling stations across the country and 143 735 persons were registred in the electoral rolls. Polling stations will be opened at 8:00 this morning and will close at 20:00.
According to the plans of the CEC, the first preliminary results of voting will be announced on August 27, 2011. The elections in Abkhazia will be observed by representatives from 15 countries.
According to experts, the country will have to hold a second round of elections. Experts belive that Ankvab and Shamba have equal chances for winning.
