The U.S. Department of State does not recognize the elections in Abkhazia
The U.S. State Department reiterated its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as well as the fact that it considers the elections in Abkhazia not legitimate.
"The U.S. does not recognize the legitimacy of the election results in the "Georgian region" of Abkhazia on August 26. We reaffirm our support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders" - RIA Novosti quoted the words of State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland. This message was reported by Trend.
The U.S. also urged Russia to comply with the terms of the ceasefire agreement, signed after the conflict in 2008.
"We call on Russia to fulfill commitments under the ceasefire agreement, including withdrawal of troops to pre-conflict positions and to provide free access to humanitarian assistance to the region" - said Nuland.
Earlier, NATO claimed it would not recognize the results of elections in Abkhazia. The same was said by the EU.
Elections in Abkhazia on August 26 won Ankvab, who scored 54.9 percent of the votes in the first round.
