The Ambassador: Azerbaijan and Turkey are preparing an agreement on gas
According to the Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kilic, currently Turkey and Azerbaijan are discussing technical issues of gas contracts. In particular, he said, it is an agreement on transit of Azerbaijani gas to Europe. As reported by Trend, another discussions are scheduled for September 2011, he added.
A transit agreement involves the sale of Azerbaijani gas directly to Europe via Turkey, he said.
The main source of supplies of Azerbaijani gas to Europe via Turkey will become the second stage of field development of "Shah Deniz". Extraction of the first gas there is expected in 2017. Europe will be able to import 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
Conclusion of a transit agreement with Turkey is necessary to transport Azerbaijani gas. This also applies to the deposit "Shah Deniz".
Currently, Azerbaijani SOCAR holds talks with potential buyers and transporters of Azerbaijani gas. However, conclusion of contracts can be expected only after the signing of a transit agreement with Turkey.
