The Labour Party stood up for soccer player Demetradze
Georgian Labor Party appealed to the foreign embassies accredited in Georgia, as well as to the Commissioner of the Council of Europe for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg with emergency treatment. As reported by the "GHN", this appeal concerns the famous Georgian footballer Giorgi Demetradze, who is currently serving a prison sentence.
Journalists were acquainted with this appeal by the international secretary of the Labour Party Nestan Kirtadze during a special briefing today. According to Kirtadze, Demetradze is under tremendous physical and psychological pressure in prison, he is on the verge of suicide.
"Giorgi Demetradze, who brought much joy to his fans and to the Georgian football, and is currently serving a prison sentence in Rustavi prison number 6 in inhumane conditions, is under unbearable physical and psychological pressure and is on the verge of suicide, what, except for publications in the Georgian media, is also confirmed by one of Demetradze's lawyers - Marika Pholadze. Three weeks ago, football player was transferred to Rustavi prison № 6 (Director - David Margebadze). There was spread information that a special card, through which the prisoner can buy food and personal hygiene products at the prison, was blocked, and as a result Giorgi Demetradze can not purchase neither food nor hygiene products such as soap, toothbrush and other items"- said International Secretary of the Labor Party.
She added that the player is hungry and very weak physically. He can not even enjoy the right to walk and can not train.
"We appeal to the embassies, international human rights organizations, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, so that the monitoring on this fact was carried out, and we would defend not only the rights of the prisoner in general but the life of a football player Giorgi Demetradze" - noted representative of the Georgian Labor Party.
"We appeal to the Public Defender of Georgia, so that from today he carried out a quick personal monitoring of this fact. We appeal to Mikhail Saakashvili and Minister Kalmakhelidze for which mortality of prisoners became statistics so that they take prompt corrective action to solve this problem" - noted a statement by the Labour Party.
The document also underlined the willingness of the party to mediate in the case of Giorgi Demetradze in the commission of a pardon.
