History of the foundation of Tbilisi might have to rewrite
Georgian archaeologists have discovered the ruins of an ancient fortress in Old Tbilisi, near the Metekhsky bridge, while exploring the territory of a local church n.a. 40 martyrs. According to specialists, this archaeological discovery may completely change the history of the founding of the current capital of Sakartvelo.
As reported by the "GHN", the discovered ruins of an ancient fortress dates to the period of Vakhtang Gorgasali. However, at this place there were also found the earlier layers of the palace which dates from much earlier period than the reign of Gorgasali.
According to scientists, if this fact will be confirmed by further studies, the entire known history of the founding of Tbilisi will be rewritten. The finding suggests that the fortress existed at this location much earlier than previously believed.
During the excavations there was also discovered the ancient "bathhouse". According to researchers, they date to the first or second century of the antique period.
Archeological investigations at the territory of old Tbilisi are jointly handled by experts of the Georgian Patriarchate and the National Museum. Municipality of the Georgian capital provides financial support for the excavations.
