Baramidze: the U.S. is not supplying weapons to Georgia because of Russia
State Minister for Integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures Baramidze said that Washington's reluctance to go to the conflict with Russia prevents the restoration of the supply of American arms of the Georgian Army.
"It's not a secret that the U.S. does not want unnecessary tension in relations with Russia and it has a certain effect on our military cooperation with the Americans" - ITAR-TASS quoted the words Baramidze.
In this case, said Baramidze, Tbilisi and Washington will continue to work in other areas relating to the military sector, in particular - the participation of Georgian peacekeepers in operations in Afghanistan and the Caucasus republic integration into NATO.
Earlier, the Georgian ambassador to the U.S. Temuri Yakobashvili said that Washington did not reject the idea of delivering weapons to Tbilisi.
"I won't reveal the details on the arms supplies. Specific comments are not in my competence. But there is no embargo by the United States" - he said.
As the diplomat said, the only obstacle to the getting modern American weaponry, including heavy and other, by the Georgian soldiers, is solely at the financial level. "It depends only on the financial capacity of Georgia how serious and sophisticated weapons of a defensive type will get Georgia ... If we want America to sell us the tanks "Abrams", the main problem is that we have not enough money" - said Yakobashvili.
Recall, some American politicians have repeatedly stated the need to restore the interrupted supply of weapons to the Georgian army. For example, during a meeting with Mikhail Saakashvili in March this year the U.S. Senator John McCain declared that Georgia should be able to "defend itself from the future Russia's assault". "The Georgian people should be able to defend themselves against aggression and therefore the question of deliveries of defense armament to Georgia is my priority as a priority of a some others congressmen" - said McCain.
