Lavrov: Russia is ready to become a guarantor of the non-use of force in the Caucasus
Russia is ready to become a guarantor of the non-use of force in the Caucasus. As reported by "Georgia-News", such position of his country was announced today during the speech of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrovof at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly.
"We are determined to do everything necessary to prevent a recurrence of a military scenario in the Caucasus as happened in August 2008" - Lavrov said. Further, he called events of August 2008 in Georgia - "the result of the regime's adventurism of Tbilisi".
"Russia is ready to become guarantor of the agreements on non-use of force between Abkhazia, Georgia and South Ossetia in the light of the official statements, made earlier in this regard by the leaders of these three sides" - stressed the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry. Russia welcomed the adoption of similar commitments by the United States and the European Union, he added.
"As the guarantor, we're be ready to take measures for non-resumption of violence in the region and in the event of unlawful use of force by either party - to achieve an early settlement of the situation on the basis of existing international law" - explained the Minister.
