Media: the U.S. force Georgia to reform police
According to Georgian media, the authorities may implement a major reform of law enforcement.
According to VZGLIAD, the local edition Akhali Taoba said that according to its sources, American advisers recommend the Georgian authorities to reorganize the Ministry of Internal Affairs and to separate police and state security agencies.
It was reported that this is how the Washington wants to prevent Georgian Interior Ministry to influence on election in the parliament, which will be held in 2012.
The current Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili is main candidate for the role of minister of state security, but the name of his successor is not yet known.
Note that the Georgian authorities consider the reform of the Interior Ministry, carried out several years ago, one of the most successful in post-Soviet space. Meanwhile, Director of Ukrainian Fund Democratic Initiatives n.a. Ilka Kucheriva Irina Bekeshkina said that the success of the reforming Georgian police was achieved by material factors.
