Sakartvelo will fight against torture
On the eve it became known that Georgia became a member of the Committee against Torture for the period 2012 - 2015 years. This was reported by "Georgia-News" referring to the Press and Information Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.
In Geneva, within the 13th meeting of members of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the election of new Committee members was held. The Georgian side was represented by the Ombudsman of the country George Tugushi, who eventually received 97 votes.
"Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia welcomes the success of Georgia's nominant and thanks all States members for their support", emphasized the Georgian Foreign Ministry in its message.
The Committee also elected Chile (111 votes were given for this country), the Republic of Mauritius - 105 votes, United States (82 votes) and Senegal (72 votes) as candidates.
The Committee against Torture - is the executive body of the United Nations which oversees implementation of the Convention against Torture.
