Media: Armenian NPP can be "mothballed"
According to a number of Armenian media, today may be the last work day for 158 employees of the engineering staff of the Armenian nuclear power plant, who last month filed a statement of resignation. This was reported by Trend.
"According to our records, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan yesterday instructed the Director General of the NPP Gagik Markosyan to sign the orders for their dismissal. This means that the Armenian nuclear power plant will be restarted and should be suspended for sometime: a significant part of specialists for the operation of NPP are employees who stated for resignation.
The applicants demanded the management of the ANPP to review and raise their salaries. To our knowledge, Armen Movsisyan said during a meeting that he would solve the problem in a month. It can be very challenging problem for Armenia to find specialists for the NPP. In any case, the first precondition for resolving specialists' problems is to revise the salaries", said newspaper "Haykakan Jamanak".
However, journalists of the edition emphasize that Armenian authorities are still reluctant to solve the problem quickly. "According to experts, in the event of termination of operation of the ANPP the needed demand for electricity will be satisfied by the thermal power plant, which during operation of the NPP are almost in a simple", writes further publication.
The article stressed the fact that the life of the Metsamor NPP had expired in 2010. However, Armenia and the IAEA experts have agreed to extend the operation of the plant until 2016.
And just on the eve, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz, expressed concern that the Metsamor NPP in Armenia is very dangerous for the whole region. This NPP should be closed immediately. This position was announced by the Minister in an interview. All over the world there are about 25 nuclear power plants, which have been operating more than 40 years, he said. All of these nuclear power plants should be closed.
