European Parliamentarians take interest in the situation with Ivanishvili's citizenship
Today the European Parliament will consider a report on the situation in Georgia at its plenary session. As reported by "Georgia-News" citing the "Echo of the Caucasus", one of the amendments to the text of the report concerns a situation with deprivation of citizenship of Georgia politician, businessman and opposition leader Bidzina Ivanishvili.
The author of this amendment is Austrian deputy Hannes Svoboda. He suggested this wording: "The European Parliament is concerned about the fact of deprivation of citizenship Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgian businessman, after he had announced his plans to establish a political party to take part in parliamentary elections in 2012. This action blocked his entry into political struggle in Georgia, and the possibility of financing political parties".
"We note that the Georgian authorities should respond to allegations that it was politically motivated decision. We note that the competitive and efficient multi-party political system is necessary for the consolidation of democracy in Georgia", said later in the document proposed by the MEP.
In an interview to Western media Hannes Svoboda said that he had decided on the amendment after he had received information "from the U.S. and the European side, as well as from American NGOs."
"We call upon the Georgian authorities not to use disproportionate political pressure on political opponents", stressed the MEP from Austria.
