The Georgian capital is expanding
Today Georgian leader Mikhail Saakashvili said that in Tbilisi the construction of a new district started. According to Trend, Saakashvili announced such information at the opening of the largest in the South Caucasus shopping center "Tbilisi Mall".
The new Tbilisi district will occupy several hundred acres of Digomi plain, the president explained. However, this is being done not for expanding the city, but to bring Georgia closer to European standards.
"By European standards, 30 square metre of housing must fall per capita, and in Georgia this figure is 15 square meters", Saakashvili said. He added that in the new area there will be constructed a new branch of the metro, new highways will be built.
"This is a historic moment for Tbilisi. Despite everything - this is the biggest construction period in the history of the country", the president added.
According to him, the construction of a new district will be started already this year, and its basic contours will be outlined by 2015.
