Saakashvili pardons 73 prisoners
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili will pardon 73 prisoners by the New Year. As was said by Public Defender Giorgi Tugushi after the committee meeting at the presidential palace in Tbilisi, only 144 applications were examined, five of them belonged to juvenile detainees.
Initially it was reported that Commission on Pardon under the president received 120 pardon applications. "The Commission has decided to make a recommendation to pardon 73 prisoners. Among them - sentences of ten prisoners were reduced by half, the rest will be liberated", Giorgi Tugushi said. According to him, among those who was pardoned - "15 women and one underage girl".
President will sign the petition for clemency until the new year.
Recall, in late November, Saakashvili pardoned 137 prisoners on the occasion of "Giorgoba" (St. George's Day). Full pardon touched 111 prisoners, sentences of six prisoners were reduced by half, sentences of two prisoners were reduced by half and 18 people were released from probation.
November 1, Georgia's councils for parole decided to release 36 detainees. September 1, at the board meeting it was decided to release 20 prisoners, among whom there were two women and three patients with tuberculosis, according to the "Caucasian Knot".
