The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 in connection with the territorial claims of Armenia against Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as seven adjacent districts - 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory - are under occupation of Armenian armed forces.
In May 1994 the parties reached a cease-fire agreement, and peaceful negotiations are currently being held under the auspices and co-chairmanship of Russia, France and the U.S.
Despite the resolutions on the liberation of Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories, taken by the UN Security Council, Armenia doesn't hasten to liberate occupied territory, "Novosti-Azerbaijan" reported.
As a result of occupation of Azerbaijani territory about one million citizens have become displaced persons and refugees.
