The opposition and the Georgian government differ in the evaluation of the new EC
According to President Mikhail Saakashvili, the recommendation of the Commission on equality of electoral districts became the only discrepancy connected to the adopted laws in Georgia, regarding the electoral process, with the recommendations of the Venice Commission. Opposition members say that Georgia has not taken into account a large number of the recommendations of the Venice Commission on the fundamental issues.
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili raised the question of the constitutional commission during a meeting with the chairman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia Zurab Kharatashvili on January 4. "It's good that we have agreed on the Electoral Code. I really liked that the Venice Commission expressed its appreciation for the changes in electoral law", Saakashvili said.
The only thing on which they cannot reach consent, according to him, is the recommendation that such small districts as Kazbegi or Lentekhi would not have deputies in parliament. "It is unacceptable for us, for our traditions, which are based on the law. For everything else, including the financing of political parties, we gained a high rating, which is based on high professional level", said Mikheil Saakashvili.
Representatives of the opposition categorically reject the president's words that there's only one issue on which the Venice Commission and the parliamentary majority have not reached consent. Georgia has not considered recommendations of the Venice Commission on none of the fundamental issue, believes the head of the commission on constitutional arrangements for the Republican Party of Georgia Vakhtang Khmaladze.
