Frost in Abkhazia spoiled 20 000 tonnes of citrus
20 thousand tons of tangerines and other citrus were spoiled this winter in the Republic of Abkhazia due to the strong frost. According to state news agency RA, because of early frosts citrus fruits had no time to ripe, so the farms have not gathered the fruits from the branches, hoping that they would have ripened, the news agency of South Ossetia reported.
"But it has become cold, the snow fell, the temperature dropped to minus 3 degrees Celsius, and a large portion of the crop left on the trees has been spoiled, causing great damage to farms and the whole economy of Abkhazia. About 20% of the total harvest is irretrievably lost, you can just throw away it! Not only economic, but also the state will lose, since as a result of the situation the state budget will receive less money", the head of the agricultural departments of Abkhazia Beslan Dzhopua said.
Meanwhile, Russian customs officials stopped to pass heavy-haul transport through the checkpoint "Psou", referring to the fact that the highway near the town of Tuapse is being renovated. In this regard, the owners of 20-ton trucks are forced to convey them to Abkhazia and back on the ferry that goes from Novorossiysk. Thus, transportation costs have risen sharply, and then, respectively, the cost of citrus. Russian organizations, for which it is not profitable to buy fruits in Abkhazia, refuse to purchase it, "Nasha Abkhazia" reported referring to "Apsnypress".
"Because of transportation problems our partners are refusing to buy our wholesale shipments of citrus fruits. They pass only undersized transport through the border into Russia, it is not beneficial to our customers. As a result, the economy cannot pay the loan back, we have a problem with the payment of land tax", the "Caucasian Knot" cited the words of the director of the largest citrus state farm "Aiaaira" in the village Mahundzhiya of Gali district Dzhambula Kortavy.
