"Democratic Movement" predicts ecological disaster
If the stream of the river Mtkvari is changed, Georgia finds itself on the verge of ecological disaster, the representatives of "Democratic Movement" stated, the GHN reported.
If the channel of the river Mtkvari is changed, many areas of Georgia would become a desert, since there won't be water for irrigation, said in a statement of the organization.
Representatives of the movement believe that signing the contract with Turkish side on the construction of hydroelectric power Georgia had not considered the strategic and geopolitical interests of the country.
"We demand full information on this question from the Government of Georgia, and the publication of an expert opinion (if it exists) why the Georgian authorities has put their own country almost on the verge of an ecological disaster", said in a statement.
Earlier, media reported that Turkey was planning to change the course of the river so that it would not pass through the territories of Georgia and Azerbaijan and would fall into the Black Sea instead of the Caspian Sea.
However, later the Ministry of Forestry and Water Economy of Turkey stated that they had renounced the project. "We considered various options and concluded that the project does not meet the stated objectives", the ministry noted.
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili called the refusal to change the stream of the river Mtkvari joint victory of diplomacy of Georgia and Turkey, Day.Az reported.
"We won't change the stream of the river Mtkvari, since we cannot allow any negative actions towards the river Mtkvari, and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reacted to our opinion with understanding; as a result our diplomats have found mutually acceptable solution", he said .
