New leaks at the Fukushima
The operator company of emergency NPP Fukushima-1 TEPCO announced the discovery of two new water leak at the station, caused by the freezing of water in the pipes, TV channel NHK reported.
The first leak was detected in the system for water purification of radioactive isotopes of cesium, the second - in the pumps system, feeding cooling water to the reactor at the fourth power unit. In both cases the water was not radioactive.
On the eve, the TEPCO announced a temporary cessation of cooling system of a pool with spent nuclear fuel at the fourth reactor of the Fukushima-1 for 1 hour and 40 minutes due to water leaks.
TEPCO experts believe that leakage occurred due to the fact that the water in the pipes of the system has frozen due to low night temperatures and has increased in volume, resulting damage of connective ring. For several days, the temperature has been 8-9 degrees below zero at night in this region .
Recent evidence suggests that approximately 40 liters of water already cleaned from the radiation has flowed from the reactor. At the sixth reactor the volume of leaked water was about seven tons.
March 2011, as a result of the earthquake and ensuing tsunami, the cooling system of reactor and pools with spent nuclear fuel at the Fukushima-1 went out of order. This caused a meltdown of fuel in three reactors. Explosions of hydrogen, occurred during first hours and days after the accident, has damaged leaktightness of power units, after which the radioactive elements got in the air and water, and then information about elevated levels of radiation in various products began to appear. 140,000 people were evacuated from the 20- and 30-kilometer zone around the station.
Late last year, it was announced that all the reactor reached the state of the cold stop, but the final liquidation of the accident and complete dismantling of the reactors will be completed no earlier than in 30-40 years, RIA Novosti reported.
