Turkish poisoners may be condemned to life imprisonment
The accused of the death of five Russians in the result of poisoning with poor-quality alcohol in Bodrum may be sentenced to life imprisonment. They were charged with premeditated murder. The first hearing is scheduled for March 5.
In total, eight people may appear in prisoner's box on this case. The indictment states that one of the accused, Ilker Atajan, has produced low-quality alcohol, sent to Ankara with false invoices, which was sold by "Birlik Gyda". The owners of the yacht "Orkan 5", on which the Russians have gone to rest, purchased 52 bottles of gin and vodka before the walk, but immediately after the incident threw out the unused bottles.
Investigators say that alcohol companies employees, owners of yachts and their partners could not be unaware of the origin of counterfeit whiskey, since prior to this the country's Agriculture Ministry had recognized this type of product under the label Mister Burdon as hazardous to health.
In total, about 12,000 bottles, seven thousand of which were confiscated by the police, had got to markets in Antalya, Mugla, Mersin and Ankara, Dni.ru.
Recall, in late May 2011, a group of more than 20 Russians got poisoned with fake alcohol during the yachting trip. Four of the victims died in hospitals in Turkey, another Russian woman - in a Moscow clinic. As the investigation has found out, the cause of poisoning was methyl alcohol contained in the counterfeit whiskey.
