Moscow was again advised "not to rely on al-Assad"
Russia won't be able to normalize the situation in Syria in cooperation with President Bashar al-Assad, the White House spokesman Jay Carney said, according to Interfax.
"We do not know the exact purposes of the trip, but in our view Russia should realize that relying on al-Assad - is the way to failure, not only for Russia's interests in Syria, but also for stability in the region and the future of Syria", Carney said, commenting on the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Syria.
"The U.S. is considering providing humanitarian assistance to the Syrians", he added, not specifying what kind of help and in what quantities is envisaged. According to him, Washington had no mechanism for the implementation of this idea.
February 7, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Mikhail Fradkov arrived in Damascus to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The diplomatic efforts of Russia were supported in Beijing. "The government of China hopes that the visit of Foreign Minister (Sergey) Lavrov and director of the SVR (Mikhail) Fradkov will be successful", Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said. He added that China was thinking of sending their own mediation mission to Syria.
