Abkhazia proposes to resume weekly meetings in Gali district2009-02-16 16:25
In the 4th round of the Genovese discussions on security on Caucasus (to be held on February 17th - 18th ) the Abkhaz side will reiterate its proposition to resume weekly meetings in Gali region and make them a constantly working mechanism, announced Sergey Shamba, the Foreign Minister of Abkhazia - ITAR TASS.gt-en-newsitem-inside
According to the Minister, "Abkhazia proposes to unite these two projects: prolongation of the UN mission and the Genovese discussions ". "We agree with the presence of the UN mission there, but not the EU one", Shamba underlined.
"The EU on behalf of all the participants claims it doesn't recognize the independence of the Republic of Abkhazia", he said. The UN, in its turn, cannot make such common statement s as it "comprises countries that recognized the independence of Abkhazia, one of them - Russia - is the UN Security Council member", he said. "Therefore such comments can be made by separate countries, but not organizations as a whole", Shamba said.
In his view, "as one of the UN mission mandate mechanisms is weekly meetings in Gali region, at the Genovese discussions the Abkhaz side will raise the issue of their resumption". "These meetings must be resumed, and, including the changes occurred, include the EU monitors conducting their work in the Georgian territory into the list of participants (Abkhazia, Georgia, the UN, Russia). The mandate of the mechanism is to be discussed in Geneva. It is quite thoroughly well worked out, and in principle we agree with it. There are some minor discords which as we hope, will be settled in the course of the discussion", the Minister said.
The Abkhaz side proposes to make Genovese discussions a constantly working mechanism instead of the "Group of friends of the UN Secretary General on Georgia". It includes the ambassadors of Great Britain, Germany, France and the USA, before the August events in included the ambassador of Russia in Georgia. "It makes quite an efficient logical scheme that can be a real condition for cooperation in creation of the security conditions in the region. If this problem is not politicized, our propositions show pragmatism, and the main participants of the process agree with us in this aspect. Let us see what the results of the Genovese discussion will be", the Minister concluded.
