Date of the launch of construction of Lazika announced

2012-08-15 14:08

Construction of a new City of Lazika on the Black Sea coast in the west of Georgia will be launched in a few days.  According to the News-Georgia, President Mikheil Saakashvili said this on Tuesday night being in the Black Sea resort of Anaklia, in the patriotic youth camp, where he met with members of the Georgian Olympic team, who returned from London.

"Realization of my main dream starts in a few days - the construction of a new and beautiful city Lazika, which will be a continuation of Poti (port city) and will become a major economic center in the region", the president said.

Vice Prime Minister Giorgi Baramidze stated in May that the construction of the port was a strategic priority for Georgia, since the country's existing ports - Batumi, Kulevi, Supsa and Poti - have now reached the full utilization of capacity, the Oil of Russia reported. The area near Lazika is a natural canyon, which makes it possible to build a modern port, able to accommodate vessels with a large displacement. Baramidze stated the new port in the future may play a significant role in the maintenance of transit freight traffic travelling from east to west.

Georgian authorities are planning to invest 200 million lari ($ 120 million) in the construction of the new city for four years.

Meanwhile, according to some estimates, the area, chosen by the authorities for the construction of the new city, is not really suitable for this.
