The statement was signed by the opposition members in the office of the Public Defender of Georgia. In this document they expressed solidarity with the arrested activists of the Democratic Movement- United Georgia and protest against the provocative actions of the authorities.
"The actions of the government is an overt provocation and an attempt to intimidate the society, make it doubt about the constitutionality of the April 9th actions," the statement claims.
The opposition demands immediate release of all the detained, whom they regard as political prisoners, and warns the government that continuation of such actions will make a reversed reaction in society.
"We reiterate that we intend to change power by peaceful, constitutional methods", the opposition members state.
The statement was signed by practically all parties of non-parliamentary opposition range, including ex-PM Nogaideli's For Just Georgia, previously acting separately.
The Alliance for Georgia leader, Irakli Alasania regarded the events as the beginning of repressions and claimed that his Alliance will get the explanations of the law enforcement structures about the arrest of Burjanadze's supporters, and then will make a decision on proper actions.
The demand to release the detained was supported by the Labour party, the three activists of which are still in prison. According to Paata Jibladze, one of the party leaders, Saakashvili's government is mistaken when thinks it can solve all the problems, including the April 9th action one, in this way.
According to today's messages, in latest 24 hours nine members of Burjanadze's party were arrested. There is no official charge for them, at least of it, from law enforcement bodies, but, according to unofficial sources, all the detained are accused of illegal purchasing and keeping of weapons. Lawyers have been recently allowed to the Burjanadze's supporters detained in Tbilisi. The Interior Ministry promises to make a statement on arrest of the Democratic Movement- United Georgia this evening.
